Is Big Walk Right for You?

Before spending anything, check the fit. Big Walk is:

  • A multiplayer-first game. It needs at least 2 players and works best with 3-5. There is no meaningful solo mode — if you cannot gather friends, hold off.
  • A talking game. Proximity voice chat is the core mechanic. You will be describing what you see, negotiating meeting points and yelling through walkie-talkies. Quiet groups miss most of the game.
  • Not a challenge-first game. There are puzzles and challenges, but the tone is hangout-first. If your group wants competitive stakes, this is the wrong game.
  • A finite adventure. It has a hand-crafted ending rather than endless content. That is a feature — House House builds games that respect your time.

If that sounds like your group, the next step is buying the right version.

What to Buy and Where

Option Price Notes
Steam (PC / Mac) $19.99, or $14.99 at launch discount 25% off until August 18, 2026
PlayStation 5 $19.99 Included with PS Plus until September 2, 2026
Nintendo Switch 2 $19.99 Full price at launch — no announced discount

The important thing is not which platform you pick — crossplay means every combination works together — but that the whole group can actually play. Two players on Steam and one on Switch 2 is fine. The price & platforms guide compares every option in detail.

Before Your First Walk: A Setup Checklist

  1. Test your microphone before the lobby opens. Voice chat is the game, so a broken mic is the one equipment failure that ruins the session.
  2. Decide who hosts. The host creates the lobby and sends invites through the platform's friend system. A player with a stable connection makes the best host.
  3. Agree on a session length. Big Walk is a journey, not a quick match. Tell everyone the window (90-120 minutes is a good first walk) so nobody has to bail mid-adventure.
  4. Everyone enables voice permissions in their platform settings — on Steam, check that your mic input device is selected; on PS5 and Switch 2, check the voice chat settings and party setup.
  5. Add each other on friends lists before the session so invites work without friction.

Beginner tip: start with 3 players. Two is fine, but with three you get the classic split-up-and-scout pattern — one player on a walkie-talkie at the meeting point while the other two explore in different directions. It teaches the communication loop without 12-player chaos.

The First 20 Minutes

Here is what a healthy first walk looks like:

  1. Everyone spawns together. Spend a minute just poking the world — pick things up, wave at each other, steal someone's binoculars. The game wants this.
  2. Establish the voice habit. Say what you see out loud, even when it seems obvious. "Big rock to my left" and "I can see a tower" are exactly the information the game runs on.
  3. Try the tools early. Equip the walkie-talkie, laser pointer and flares. Split up for thirty seconds and walkie-talkie back to each other so everyone learns how the audio shifts.
  4. Pick a direction toward the big wall. Challenges are scattered through the landscape — follow landmarks, keep talking, and do not sprint past the toys.
  5. Stop and hang out. Watch a sunset. The developers put it in the feature list for a reason.

Three Co-op Habits to Start With

1. Announce before you act

Every player should get in the habit of narrating their intent: "I'm going to check behind that hill," "I'm crossing the river now." In a game where voices fade with distance, the sentence before you leave is the only one that always arrives.

2. Keep a walkie-talkie plan

When the group splits, someone should stay on a walkie-talkie at a known landmark. Without a plan, split groups become two silent games. With one, splitting is the fastest way to cover ground. More detail in the communication tools guide.

3. Ask what everyone sees

Puzzles in Big Walk are team puzzles. The player looking at the mechanism and the player looking at the clue might be two different people on opposite sides of a valley. The question "what can you see?" is the game's most powerful item.

Common Beginner Questions

Can I play Big Walk alone?

Technically a lobby can be joined by one player, but the game is designed for 2-12. You will miss the entire communication loop, which is the point of the game.

Do all players need the same platform?

No. Big Walk supports full crossplay between PC, Mac, PS5 and Switch 2. See the crossplay guide for platform setup details.

Does Big Walk have matchmaking?

There is no public matchmaking queue — you play with people you invite, or who use your Join Code. Sessions are also visible to the friends of everyone already playing, so set a session password if you want the group closed.

How long is a full Big Walk run?

There is no official number yet, but it is a hand-crafted finite adventure designed to be played start-to-finish with friends — plan for an evening per major session, and take your time.

Is Big Walk suitable for kids?

It is a wholesome, non-violent adventure. The main consideration is voice chat with strangers — but since the game is friends-only, you control who joins.
